Hawk in the Hood

Here in the suburbs of Washington, DC, we’re used to watching political hawks squawk on TV (think Donald and Hillary).

But we never expected to see a Red Tailed Hawk…

She (he?) visited us on two cold, February mornings.

Just chillin and hawkeyed.

We think your red-tailed hawk has reduced in size to a sharp-shinned hawk. The red-tailed is much larger at 19″ and the sharp-shinned is 11″; both are in your area. Look at photos online and see if you agree. Nice spotting!

I wasn’t sure about it being a Red Hawk–labeled it on a wing and a prayer. But the sharp-shinned appears to have a gray back. Maybe it’s a Cooper’s.
